2005 SOUTH TEXAS MEDICAL CENTER
AREA PROGRESS REPORT

The attached report as of January 1, 2005 indicates continued substantial growth of the facilities in the South Texas Medical Center. It should be noted that a number of institutions, which could represent a 10% or greater increase in the totals, refuse to divulge data concerning their entity resulting in an understatement of the total Medical Center facilities' impact on the community.

Plant values, not adjusted for inflation, representing the original investments in physical facilities and equipment, less depreciation, represents approximately $1.854 billion, a $120 Million increase in 2004 over the previous year.

Combined budgets, including research, could not be totaled for 2005 due to a computer programming error. The total for 2004, $2.5 Billion, is a 20% over 2000. Research within the Medical Center totaled $156 Million, more than doubled the amount from a decade earlier.

Employment of both full and part-time employees remained relatively stable at 26,757. Volunteers assisting Medical Center facilities were also stable, with a total of over 8,400.

Total inpatient visits broke a downward trend for the fourth consecutive year, with only a slight increase of 345 over the previous year, for a total of 102,216. Total outpatient visits experienced a 13.5% increase over the previous year, for a total of 3.92 Million.

Capital projects currently in progress total over $65 Million. Capital projects already planned for the next five years add an additional $152 Million.

A survey to indicate the economic impact of the privately supported hospitals in the Medical Center was recently made. Of the 371,000 patients treated, 30% or over 111,000, came from outside Bexar County. The total estimated annual billings and economic impact for those patients coming from outside Bexar County was approximately $573 Million.
